Edith Coon

Edith M. Coon, 84, formerly of Emporium and New Port Ritchey, Fl., died Wednesday, October 4, 2006, in DeMay Living Center, Newark, New York.

Born February 12, 1922 in Cherry Tree, PA, she was the daughter of Raymond A. and Edna Young Nelson.

On July 26, 1943 in Bakersfield, California, she married Thomas E. Coon who survives.

A resident of Emporium for 50 years, Mrs. Coon was originally from Ligonier, where she was a 1939 graduate of Ligonier High School. In 1985 she and her husband retired to New Port Ritchey, Fl. where they resided until moving to Victor, NY in 2004.

Mrs. Coon was a member of the First Baptist Church of Emporium where she was the church organist for many years, was a Sunday School teacher and also served as a deaconess.

Surviving in addition to her husband are: two daughters, Janice (Bruce) Comstock of Victor, NY and Gwen M. Mix of Newark, NY; two granddaughters, Stacie (Burt) Kem of Victor and Kerri (Michael) Ryan of New Providence, NJ; three great grandchildren; one brother, Jack Nelson of Ligonier; two sisters, Esther Zimmer of Ligonier and Lorraine Buell of Laughlintown; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one brother, Paul Nelson and one sister, Lois Crandall.

Friends will be received in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium, Saturday, Oct. 7 from 1-3 p.m. at which time Funeral & Committal Services will be held with the Rev. R. Scott Melott, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Emporium, officiating.

Burial will be in Newton Cemetery, Emporium.
