Mary Kay Placer

Mary Kay Placer, 93, of Smethport, died Monday (Jan. 22, 2007) in the Sena Kean Manor.

Born Oct. 16, 1913 in Brooklyn, N.Y. she was a daughter of John and Mary Knaus Karowitz, who were immigrants from Austria.

On Nov. 16, 1935, in Smethport, she married Anton Tony Placer, who died July 21, 1981.

Mrs. Placer was employed by Sylvania Electric Products of Emporium for many years. She was a member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church of Smethport, the Catholic Daughters of America and the Norwich Township Firemen's Auxiliary.

She is survived by five daughters, Jennie (Lauren) Songer of Emporium; Mary (Frank) Leonard of Virginia; Nancy Patrick of Crosby; Katy (David) Rumsey of Smethport and Ann (Dan) Furman of Sugar Grove; two sons, Tony (Karen) Placer of Smethport and Frank Placer of Crosby; 19 grandchildren; 24 greatgrandchildren; five sisters, Ann Molenda of Rochester, N.Y.; Dorothy McGonnell, Doris Kozial and Victoria Kennedy, all of Olean, N.Y.; and Katy Record of Georgia; and one brother, John Karowitz of Olean.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two grandsons, Brock Placer on June 17, 1997 and Tony Leonard on Nov. 18, 2002; three sisters, Helen Zrimsek, Tillie Cappelletti and Genevieve Ploetek; and one son-in-law, Robert Patrick.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, with the Rev. Vincent P. Cieslewicz, pastor, as celebrant. Burial was in St. Elizabeth's Cemetery.
