Joseph B. Valenti

DECEMBER 9, 1928 - APRIL 6, 2008

Joseph B. Valenti, 79, of Austin, died Sunday (April 6, 2008) at his home.

Born on Dec. 9, 1928, in Austin, he was the son of Michael and Frances Dorio Valenti. On Aug. 28, 1954 in Austin he married Alma H. Johnson, who died on July 9, 1993.

Mr. Valenti was a lifelong resident of Austin and attended Austin schools. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U. S. Navy.

He was employed for 35 years with GTE Sylvania in Emporium and later as a custodian with the Austin Area School District, retiring in 1991. He had most recently been employed with GKN Sinter Metals in Emporium.

He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin and a lifetime member of Austin V.FW. Post 7810. He was also a member and third degree knight of Knight of Columbus Council 1355 of Coudersport.

Mr. Valenti was a 35-year member of Austin Borough Council, past member of local sportsmen's clubs and a member of the Quarter Century Club of GTE Sylvania. He was an avid local school sports fan and was once cited by the Austin Sports Boosters as "Fan of the Year."

Surviving are a daughter, Vera E. Valenti of Austin; five sons, James P. (Celia) Valenti, Joseph M. (Sue) Valenti, Jeffrey G. (Ali) Valenti, John W. (Rhonda) Valenti, and Jesse L. (Michelle) Valenti, all of Austin; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Marcia (Earl) Aspberger of Williamsville, N.Y., and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, an infant brother, Ralph Valenti, and a sister, Theresa M. Mulcahy.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin with the Rev. Vincent P. Cieslewicz as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Augustine-St. Paul Cemetery in Costello. Military rites were accorded at the cemetery by members of the Potter County Honor Guard.
