Community building for sale

Members of Galeton Borough Council are sticking to their guns in attempting to sell the community building.

Borough offices and the police department were relocated to leased space at 15 West Street after Council opted to close the building. Council cited building code deficiencies, rising utility and insurance costs, safety and liability concerns, and the lack of handicapped accessibility at the 92-year-old building.

At different times, the three-story building has been home for receptions, proms, banquets, athletic events, dances, workshops and more. It was used as an annex for school lunches and as a medical clinic.

Council is accepting sealed bids until March 13. It’s being sold “as is,” and the borough’s bid notice cites a six-year-old metal roof, a basketball court with a wooden floor and some minor repairs over the years.
