Casting away the scars of war

Throughout the summer, his Cast Away Charters business is offering combat-injured veterans free meals, overnight lodging and a day of fishing aboard a Lake Erie charter boat, sailing out of Barceloa Harbor in Westfield, N.Y.

Fishing is a major focus, but relaxation, eating, story-telling and camaraderie are also part of the experience. Discussions of roadside bombs, mortar attacks, jammed automatic weapons, grenades in close quarters and other tales sometimes arise, as well.

The wounded warriors receive pointers on open-water tackle and other aspects of fishing before they set out on the water.

Many volunteers and supporting businesses help to assure that it’s an experience the veterans will never forget.

Qualified veterans need only provide transportation to Westfield and may need to buy a one-day fishing license for $10 or less. More information is available at 716-560-9216 or through a website, castawaycharters.net
