Death Notices

Sharon R. Narby

Sharon R. Narby, 75, of Emporium, died June 28, 2014, at her residence. She was born in Emporium, a daughter of William and Margaret Eckert Ramarge. In 1958 she married L. Maxwell Narby. A 1956 graduate of Cameron County High School, Sharon worked for the school district for a time as an assistant librarian. She was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church. Among survivors are a daughter, LuAnn (Mrs. Jeff) Reed, and a son, James Narby, both of Emporium; a brother, Mahlon Ramarge of Olean, N.Y.; and a sister, Frances Ramarge of Emporium. Barnett Funeral Home handled arrangements. Burial was in St. Mark Catholic Cemetery.

Gene Arthur Cobb

Gene Arthur Cobb, 62, of Roulette, died June 22, 2014, at his home. He was born in Coudersport to Norma Cobb Nichols and Daniel H. Cobb. In 1978, he married Sally Cobb in Grafton, N.C. Gene was a retired PennDOT operator. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion. Among survivors are his mother; his wife; a daughter, Melissa Hancock of Dallas, N.C.; a brother, Craig Cobb, Coudersport; and five sisters, Barbara Cobb (Mrs. Jim) Boothby, Coudersport, Norma (Mrs. Brian) Pekarski, Coudersport, Dannette McKinzie, Frackville, Marybelle (Mrs. Joe) Martin of Mississippi, and Gem Renee Gibbons of Mississippi. Services will be held on July 26. Time and location will be announced. Memorials may be made to the SPCA or the local fire departments.

Elwin S. Jeffers

Elwin S. “Jeff” Jeffers, 86, of Ulysses, died June 27, 2014, in Sweden Valley Manor, Born in North Bingham, he was the son of Gaylord and Hazel Naylor Jeffers. In 1948 he married Mary A. White. A self-employed carpenter, he also owned and operated Jeff’s Fix-It Shop in Ulysses. He was past chief of the Tri-Town Volunteer Fire Company, scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop No. 530, and a member of the Ulysses First Baptist Church. Among survivors are three sons, Gene Jeffers of Sabinsville, James Jeffers of Ulysses, and Gary Jeffers of Carlisle; three daughters, Donna (Mrs. Donald) Richardson of Monroeton, Roxanne (Mrs. Anthony) Tomak of Campbell, N.Y., and Lori (Mrs. Kenneth) Risser of Ulysses; and two sisters, Kathleen Bledsoe of Olean, N.Y., and Alice Flynn of Galeton. Olney Funeral Home, Ulysses, handled arrangements. Burial was in Ulysses Cemetery.

Merrill C. Swank

Merrill C. Swank, 93, of Galeton, died June 25, 2014, at Cole Memorial Hospital. Born in First Fork, he was a son of Percy and Ella (Caldwell) Swank. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Merrill was married to the former Ruanna Wykoff. He worked at the milk production plant in Middlebury Center and as a bus driver for the Galeton Area School District. Among survivors are three sons, Philip Swank of Port Allegany, Robert Swank of St. Louis, Mo., and James Swank of Lebanon; and two siblings, Percy Swank and AnnaBelle Cooper of Emporium. Memorials may be made to Gale Hose Ambulance. Hess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Leland A. Cary

Leland A. “Pete” Cary, 91, formerly of Harrison Valley, died March 10, 2014 in Virginia Beach, Va. A memorial service will be held at 11 am Saturday, July 5, at the Olney Funeral Home, Ulysses. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by members of the Potter County Honor Guard.

Thomas R. Hunter

Thomas R. Hunter, 64, of Knoxville, died June 29, 2014 in the Bath (N.Y.) VA Medical Center. A graveside service will be held 11 am Saturday, July 26, in Riverview Cemetery, Potter Brook. Military rites will be accorded by members of the Tioga County Honor Guard. Olney Funeral Home, Ulysses, is handling arrangements.
