Domestic Violence Awareness Day

Potter County residents are being asked to turn out in force next weekend to show their support for victims of domestic violence and the multiple ongoing local efforts to prevent it.

Fourth annual Domestic Violence Awareness Day in Roulette on Saturday, July 18, will include a five-kilometer walk, auction, candlelight vigil/ remembrance service and several fun events. Proceeds will be used for domestic violence prevention, education and victim support activities by A Way Out, the county’s support agency.

Those attending are asked to wear purple, which is a symbol of solidarity in support of domestic violence victims.

Many activities will be based at the Roulette Firehall. They will kick off with a five-kilometer walk to promote awareness at 9:30. Registration opens at 8:30 for $20 per participant. Each walker will receive a themed T-shirt.

Roulette Volunteer Fire Department is holding a chicken barbecue, starting at 11.

A new public participation event has been added to the schedule. It’s the Tailgating Games Tournament, kicking off at 1pm at the Roulette Tee-Ball Fields. Cost is $20 for teams of two for competition in ladder golf, washer toss, kan jam, bocce ball and corn hole. “Beginners” are welcome to participate in the lighthearted competition. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

Also, there will be judging of a homemade barbecue sauce contest at 2 pm, and a chocolate dessert contest at 3. Cost for each contest is $5.00 per entry. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top three entries. Judges are needed and anyone interested in volunteering should call 814- 544-8092.

Auction items will be on display at the firehall. Education and advocacy booths will be set up by A Way Out, Potter County Human Services, and other organizations.

A candlelight vigil remembering all victims of domestic violence is scheduled for 7 pm outside of the Riverside United Methodist Church. “Your Voice is Key” is this year’s theme and the service is open to all.
