ATV meeting Saturday

ATV riders are continually frustrated by the lack of trails on state forest land. A meeting to marshal the forces and map out a lobbying strategy is scheduled for 9 am Saturday, July 2, at the Bear Den Bar & Grill in Sterling Run.

Legislation is pending that would require a portion of the snowmobile and ATV license fees collected by the state to be used for ATV trail development and maintenance.

Supporters maintain that having more legal riding opportunities on public land would benefit local economies, curb trespassing, and eliminate the damage that often accompanies it. They’re working on forming an all-terrain vehicle association to elevate the issue with the state legislature. Bear Den owner Jeff Snell has spearheaded a petition drive designed to achieve the same goal. Cameron County Commissioners Lori Reed, Phil Jones and Jim Thomas have also lent support to the initiative.
