Local weather: Punxy Phil got it all wrong

(This is a report from Henry Lush, Galeton area observer for the National Weather Service.)

Punxsutawney Phil did not call an early spring accurately again this year. It is a good thing he is not with the National Weather Service.

February was cold and snowy plus windy with freezing rain. The month started out with a reading of minus 13 degrees. Then it warmed for a day or two. Mid-month, a major storm hit the area. Schools, businesses, roads and churches closed. It was very windy and snowy.

It was cold but not frigid for the rest of the month with another damaging wind day on the 25th.

For the month we received 2.31” of rain and melted precipitation and 10.6” of snow. Last year 2.78” of rain and melted precipitation was noted and 14.7” of snow.

This February we had 1” of snow or more on the ground for 23 days; three foggy mornings and ice glaze on two days. Greatest snow depth was 7” on Feb. 1-2.

Average rain for the month is 2.22 inches. Average high temperature is 34 degrees and average low is 16 degrees.
