It's Maple Weekend!

While the technology and product selection have changed, the basics of maple syruping are timeless – collect the sap and boil it down. Upwards of 50 years ago, Bryan Morley was doing just that at his grandfather Edwin J. Morley’s syruping operation near Gold. Some 17 maple producers are holding open houses over the March 16-17 weekend. Some 17 maple producers are holding open houses over the March 16-17 weekend. Hundreds of people will fan out across Potter and Tioga counties Saturday and Sunday for the 15th annual Maple Weekend.

Seventeen producers are planning open houses from 10 am to 4 pm. Most of them will offer products and conduct tours, sharing stories of how they collect and process maple sap. Some will offer breakfasts featuring pancakes and pure maple syrup.

Even the creation of products varies at each location. They range from maple salad dressing or barbecue sauce to jellies, cookies, maple milkshakes and cotton candy.

Each farm has a specialty and a recipe or two that have been passed down through the family over generations.

Maple Weekend has been a big hit for producers, drawing visitors from downstate Pennsylvania and several other states. Potter/ Tioga Maple Producers Assn. sponsors the tour. Details can be found on the website, pamaple.com.
