For the people of Cameron County, the initial news of a train derailment brought back haunting memories of a decade ago when a Norfolk Southern train derailed, dumping thousands of gallons of lye into Portage Creek. The caustic solution made its way into the Driftwood Branch of the Sinnemahoning and killed tens of thousands of aquatic species. But, Wednesday’s derailment was relatively harmless. Officials said cars carrying sand used in local gas well drilling applications slipped off the tracks on Emporium’s east end. The mishap caused a two hour traffic delay, but nothing more. The cars were still tipped nearly on their sides at presstime. No one was hurt in the incident. No additional information was available.
